Every PHP developer has heard it: "But it works on my machine!" Docker solves this permanently by packaging your application and all its dependencies into a portable container.
By the end of this guide you will have a three-service stack:
FROM php:8.3-fpm-alpine
RUN docker-php-ext-install pdo pdo_mysql
COPY . /var/www/html
WORKDIR /var/www/htmlNever hardcode credentials. Use a .env file locally and secrets management in production. Docker Compose reads .env automatically.
Containers are immutable. If you are modifying a running container to fix something, you are doing it wrong.
Once your stack is running locally, the next step is adding a health check, a production multi-stage build, and hooking it into your CI/CD pipeline.
